Kambaba jasper is not actually a jasper. It consists of quartz, alkali feldspar, amphibole, aegirine, and trace amounts of calcite. The name kambaba jasper is derived from its place of origin, the area of Kabamba (also spelled Kambaba) in the west central Bongolava region of Madagascar. It is also sold under the trade name crocodile jasper after its eye shaped pattering.

Traditional lore says that kambaba jasper is good for plant growth and health in arid climates or wherever the soil is poor.
